Happy New Year

Image
Thought for the day:The reasonable man adapts himself to the world; the unreasonable one persists in trying to adapt the world to himself. Therefore all progress depends on the unreasonable man. --George Bernard Shaw Here’s wishing everyone a Happy 2008. I hope this year ended with your expectations being matched and the next year surpasses the expectations you have from 2008. For starters, Wouldn’t you like to be in their shoes? Bengali bombshells Koena Mitra and Tanushree Dutta are being paid Rs 55 lakh each for a New Year Eve dance show at a hotel. Rakhi Sawant will rock a Juhu hotel for a similar purse. And Bipasha Bapu will be paid between Rs 85 to 90 lakh for 30 hip-shaking minutes at a five-star hotel. Other swingers like Malaika Arora Khan and Rimi Sen are in demand. Priyanka Chopra is in Phuket to shoot an advert. And, what are the men doing? Why, blowing it up, of course. The moolah, I mean. At the risk of asking an oft-repeated question for this time of the year, let me ...

Unusual Happenings

(Above pic: Look carefully-is it a view from the top or the bottom?) Thought for the day:I feared change, until I saw that even the most beautiful butterfly had to undergo a metamorphosis before it could fly. Hi,all..How's the 'season to be merry' treating you? How's the year going to end? With a bang or a whimper? It all depends on you, of course. With most of the people on my blogroll being on a holiday, and, me feeling too lazily peaceful to think and post, I decided to do a bit of surfing to find some unusual/bizarre/zany events of year 2007. And, here are some of them: - An Australian bank was embarrassed when it emerged that it had issued a credit card to a cat. The owner of Messiah, a ginger tom, had put in the spoof application to test the bank's security system. - A 100-year-old woman in Germany moved out of her retirement home after six weeks saying she found the other residents not only boring but also "too old". She returned home to her cat. -...

Funny songs et al

Thought for the day: Listen to everyone. Assemble the facts. Confirm the facts. Form your own opinions. Note: Inspirations is also updated today. With a five day holiday coming up from tomorrow, LG.(Now,don't ask what LG is) Don’t you just love unusual song lyrics? I can think of two, nee, three unusual songs like this. The first one: I have this song in my ‘music to walk fast by’ music player, and, it’s definitely quite a,err, walkable tune. Richie Valens: La Bamba Para bailar la bamba Para bailar la bamba Se necesita una poca de gracia Una poca de gracia pa'mí y pa' tiAy Arriba y arriba Ay arriba y arriba por ti seré Por ti seré Por ti seré Yo no soy marinero, Yo no soy marinero Soy capitan Soy capitan Soy capitan Bamba, BambaBamba, BambaBamba, Bamba(Repeats) And the translation(Google zindabad): "To dance La Bamba. To dance La Bamba you need to be a little bit funny.A little bit funny and another little thing -- get going, get going! (literally 'get up and get up...

Games, Chanakya,et al

Thought for the day: If Practice makes perfect, and nobody's perfect, then why practice? At a recent get-together just before Diwali, our group of friends had got together. Some of the interesting ‘participation’ games which came up, which were quite new to me,were: - A chair was placed on the stage. The announced said’ the first person to put a picture of his spouse(from his wallet) on this chair, wins a prize’. - On the same chair, the next one from the announcer- ‘the first person to put the smallest Indian currency on the chair, wins the prize’. - This one was like Housie:A card containing 16 squares(Or, was it 15?) just like in house, was given to everyone. Their task- everyone has to move around the room and get people to sign their name in a blank square. Then, just like housie, chits of all the names were put in a basket, and one by one, each name was read out. And, again, just as in housie, there were four corners, quick 5, three lines and a full house prize. (I don't ...

Near misses and other happenings

(Caption for above pic: Ad : Simply the best- Kerala airlines) Thought for the day: If the facts don't fit the theory, change the facts....Albert Einstein Two near misses in a day-isn't that a bit too much? The first one was this morning-was returning home from my walk, and just as I was crossing the road, an idiotic driver brought his car from slightly on the wrong side, and, missed me by about two inches. The evening one was more scary. I'd gone to deposit a cheque for a friend and enjoy my evening walk at the same time. So, I went by this route, and, crossed from a signal, reached the bank, and was on my way back.. This time,I walked on the opposite side of the road near the signal, as I usually do, for 'variety'(you know-observing things on both sides of the road by turn). Had I been on the same side returning, as I'd been, going, I'd be in a hospital(with any luck) by now. There was the driver of this car which,to avoid another one at the signal, lost cont...
