The Lungi Brigade

Thought for the day: Motivation is the art of getting people to do what you want them to do because they want to do it. ~ Dwight D “News is just in of… ”- a phrase which often brings excitement to us ordinary people. In India, there are so many ‘news networks’ (And, I am not referring to the TV ones) in and around our cities/towns, that it’s unbelievable. Be it the friendly neighbourhood boot-polishwallah(shoeshine guy) or the paanwallah(Paan seller) or the sabjiwallah(Veggie vendor)- you go anywhere near their respective shops and you’ll get to hear a good sprinkling of the latest gossip around town and who’s doing what to whom, depending on how well you know them. There’s also the ‘khabari’( nosey parker in polite terms) around offices, whose main job is to keep his ears open twofold and listen in to anyone talking about anything, and convey the juicy bits to the boss(es). That’s a breed I always identify first, whichever company I join, since it can help in getting your happiness/ir...

Random Happenings

(Quip for pic: If you saw something other than innocence in the above pic, you have a dirttttyyy mind!ROFL) Thought for the day: When people are free to do as they please, they usually imitate each other. You know what? Sometimes, it doesn't make sense to try and force oneself to write posts- coz it just does not work out,at least in my case. So, what I do is, ensure I'm in the right mood to post,at the right bit of free time, and voila! Just updated my 'Inspirations' (Got it as a forward, and decided to put it up before the one I'd planned to put, today! Next one coming up by day-after). I need some feedback,folks- do you read them?Do you get a 1% or more inspiration? Do let me know! Another letter in Weekend mag. The article I commented upon, was about the 'ordeal' of the daughter of the writer(who lives in Toronto), who goes to India for a four month training schedule...to Amchi Mumbai, rather! For those who want to read the article, here's the link . Holiday,ad,et al

Image
Thought for the day: Nowadays some people expect the door of opportunity to be opened with a remote control.... M. Charles Wheeler Good ole Georgie...he got us an unexpected holiday. What happened is this-yesterday morning,I was in conversation with an office colleague, and said' Doesn't it feel funny,to have a full five day working week, after nearly 5 weeks?Every week, there's been at least one additional free day.' Not that I'm averse to work, but,it's always nice to have a break in between two-three tough work days, isn't it? Anyway, so, this topic was forgotten and we shifted over to our respective work routines, and time flew by as it always does on the first day of the week. By afternoon, came the first rumour- Is it a holiday tomorrow? I was astonished- Why, I asked? "Well,we heard that a number of roads will be closed in the city tomorrow, due to Georgie's visit. So, it might be declared a holiday", came the reply. To cut a long story, nee, ap...

A Tag, A Tag

Image
(Quip for above pic: GIF images mein aisa (b)hi hota hai!) Thought for the day: There are some people who live in a dream world, and there are some who face reality; and then there are those who turn one into the other.... Douglas Everett I came across a fun tag after quite some time, on Ditty and Poo 's blogs, both of whom gave such interesting answers that I was ROFLling. (Incidentally, Ditty was one of the 'inspirations' for me in my initial blogging days, and continues to write interesting posts, albeit,a bit irregularly) It's pretty simple. You pick up your iPod/ any other mp3 player(preferable on shuffle mode) or even your favourite songs compilation CD, look at a question, move to the next song and write that down as an answer. It makes for some hilarious reading and also some massive ironies! PS In case you don't have shuffle mode, then just connect your player to your PC,and randomly pick a song from the list. Here goes: What would best describe yo...

Another of those days

Thought for the day: Blessed is he who expects nothing, for he shall never be disappointed! (Quip: One of my mottos. That is, of course, without losing your optimism level) It’s been quite some time since I recounted some of my ‘interesting’ telephone calls at work. So, here’s one of them: (Phone rings. I pick up): Supplier: Hello, Sir. Me: Hello,Sir (Feeling more buoyant than I usually do towards evening time) Supplier: How are you? Me: Fine, fine. Supplier: Did you get my quote for the dining tables and benches? Me: Yes, I did. Supplier: What do you think? Me: (Slightly irritated now): What is there to think? Supplier: You see, Sir. We quoted the table with four legs since it is eight feet long. Me: Ok. So?(Irritated note visible in my voice now). Supplier: So, would you like it with six feet? You see, the price of the two legs would have to be added. So, would we stand a chance? (Me, wondering: Is that 'stand' a pun?) Me: It’s up to you....

Word Oddities

Thought for the day: There are people who climb the ladder of success wrong by wrong. Do you watch out for peculiar character traits in people where their style of talking is concerned? They seem to have a pet phrase/ word which becomes so much a part of their lives that they keep on repeating it in every line they speak. In fact, if you’re honest, even you’ll have some such traits. Let me recall some of the more memorable ones from the past: (a )‘Are you with me?’ : A boss in my first company had this as his pet phrase, and I remember it from the days when I was a GET(Graduate Engineer Trainee). We had a thirty five day training schedule in Pune, and he was the coordinator, meaning that he used to be the one introducing each ‘lecturer/teacher’, and also, would be taking some of the classes himself. So, everytime he would introduce someone he’d go’ This is Mr. So-and-so. He has been with us since ….. Are you with me?’ And, when he was taking the subject of airconditioning for textile i...
